Music at Kirkwood Concert Set for 7pm July 15
From "The Kirkwood Times," Issue No. 48 - Summer, 2006
"Music at Kirkwood is returning to Kirkwood Mountain Resort for its third season, from July 9-15, 2006. Public performances are scheduled for Saturday, July 15 in the KCA Red Cliffs Club. The participant concert will begin at 4 pm. A wine and cheese reception will follow, with the faculty concert commencing at 7 pm. Attendees will be treated to musical selections from composers such as Schubert, Brahms, Poulenc, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman. If you have not yet listened to chamber music performed as the sun sets over this beautiful mountain valley, you have missed a special experience.
"Music at Kirkwood is a week-long summer chamber music festival which is held annually in Kirkwood. The festival, which was co-founded by Amy Duxbury and Dawn Harms in 2004, aims to provide adult amateur musicians with a week of coachings by world-class faculty, culminating in a weekend of public performances. This year 40 participants will travel to Kirkwood to be coached by seven top-caliber faculty, including members of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony.
"Music at Kirkwood started after a conversation Dawn Harms had with violinist and Charity Valley resident Kathryn Gould. "Kirkwood is such a beautiful place. It would be a wonderful setting for a music festival," explained Kathryn. Dawn was intrigued, visited Kirkwood, and the rest is history. The inaugural season was comprised of mostly friends and colleagues, but now in its third season, the festival has tripled in size.
"With continued support and interest from the Kirkwood community, this annual event will continue to prosper and grow. Kirkwood has a unique opportunity to nurture the festival and perhaps someday we will have our own version of the Aspen Music Festival here in the Sierra.
